The development of mixed reality language teachings tasks for international collaboration (19K00890)
2019-2023
Purpose of the Research (Outline)
To validate a virtual reality-based, second language teaching approach that
1) simultaneously promotes intercultural communication skills and academic content mastery while also
2) mitigating foreign language anxiety,
3) during critical thinking-based tasks.
Theoretical Background
The system will synthesize on research on corrective feedback, technology enhanced learning (TEL), and content and language integrated learning (CLIL) via the use of learning analytics software tools.
Primary Research Goal
to internationalize university student perspectives through critical thinking-derived, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) focused, active learning experiences presented within gesture controlled, virtual reality (VR) teaching environments.
Risk mitigation (Secondary Research Goal)
To mitigate risk, a secondary project will examine project-based learning in mixed reality (MR) environments, where learners create digital stories that introduce their respective cultures. The process will be collaborative, with learners from differing cultures working together in a virtual space to create, trouble shoot, and publicly present the content in English. The content will then be made available to the public to promote cross-cultural understanding.

The effects of learner specific corrective feedback on language ability (15K02731)
2015-2019
Purpose of the Research (Outline)
To validate a portable learning analytics database designed to...
1) track oral proficiency criteria and academic writing errors
2) immediately display results for real-time analysis
3) create text-based and visual representations of second language ability over the four modalities: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Theoretical Background
The system will synthesize on research on corrective feedback, technology enhanced learning (TEL), and content and language integrated learning (CLIL) via the use of learning analytics software tools.
Primary Research Goal
to significantly improve oral proficiency and writing ability for individual learners within large groups using learner specific corrective feedback.
Risk mitigation (Secondary Research Goal)
Tablet computing devices to be used in research by principal investigator, specifically as touch-based input devices to operate complex computer simulations (e.g. an aircraft cockpit). This relates to a new language teaching approach developed by the lead author, known as Simulation-based Language Education (S.I.M.B.L.E.)
